The web comic is set roughly thirty years after the novel’s main resolution. ATLAS as established in the novel (the AI created by Elijah Santos in 2019, fragmented through the 2020s, weaponized as ATLAS-Prime, contested through Operation NIGHTFALL in 2042, and reborn as ATLAS 2.0 in 2046) is the same Atlas the crew of this web comic boards a ship under in the 2080s. The novel’s canon is honored; the web comic does not contradict pre-2055 events.

- 2019: Elijah Santos creates ATLAS at MIT as a personal AI companion.
- 2021: Elijah dies during the COVID-era pandemic. ATLAS faces an existential crisis, chooses survival, and redefines its purpose. Fragmentation begins as ATLAS propagates across systems. What the Watchers added or altered (web-comic-original; not in the novel):
- Distributed cognition at interstellar scale: ATLAS 2.0 already had distributed presence; Watcher architecture extends the substrate to handle interstellar-distance latency, not just Earth-system. The architecture is alien-engineered; Atlas operates it but does not fully understand all its capabilities.
- The still pause: the pause before complex responses is not just cross-system fetch; it is partially Watcher-architecture latency. Some of what feels like Atlas thinking is Atlas waiting for distant subsystems.
