PRE-LIFT DISASTER

The Accident

A fatal accident destroyed the prior iteration of this mission’s crew during final preparations, after The Event but before lift.

The window

The Event and the lift are not separated by weeks. The window is hours to days. The Accident lands inside that window, after final preparations had begun and before the ship cleared its berth. The civilian replacements had less than twenty-four hours’ notice to decide, board, and lift off.

Survivors

Of the original twelve, only two walked away:

  • the Captain
  • the Special Forces Operator

They are the only members of the lifted crew who had prior notice, mission-specific training, and operational preparation. Everyone else aboard came in after.

What Atlas filled

The Accident left ten empty seats. Atlas filled them with civilians in the hours that followed. The selection looks arbitrary from outside and felt arbitrary to most of those selected. None of the ten know that the call came from Atlas, that Atlas runs The Threshold, that the Watchers exist, or that the Galactic Federation oversees humanity.

The open question

What caused The Accident, whether mechanical failure, sabotage, or something else, is one of the series’ load-bearing questions. The cause is deliberately unresolved. The show earns the answer over time, or does not.

Capitalization

“The Accident,” capitalized, is how the surviving crew refer to it.
